A: Is there anything specific or anything interesting you want to say about Taekwondo?
B: Pretty much just the mental sharpness and the physical conditioning about it and that's what we are looking for. He primarily wanted to learn martial arts and after looking at all the different martial arts, we thought that Taekwondo was the most organized and disciplined of the martial arts.
A: Where did you hear about Taekwondo? Did you hear it from your friends?
C: We got a flier from my school about it. There was a flier to my school but we didn't get a chance to go so we went to my summer camp and they had the descriptions there and that's how I went to the old one and then we found this place because the old one sort of wasn't as good.
A: For the parents, why did you decide to enroll your child in a Taekwondo school?
B: Primarily, he wanted to do it and after we looked into it, we found, like I said, there is a strong discipline structure to it, physical fitness part of it. It was a very well organized program. That's why we chose to come to Taekwondo.
A: So, I think you already answered. Do you know anything about other martial arts? Is there anything that Taekwondo is especially appealing?
B: I learned some martial arts in the military and just from talking to different people who know about martial arts.
Just from what we have learned from martial arts, we thought Taekwondo was the martial arts form to learn. We were most impressed with Taekwondo.
A: What kind of influence do you think Taekwondo has on your child?
B: Do you wanna answer? You want me to answer?
D: I can answer that. His concentration. He has improved greatly.
A: Academically?
D: He used to be like this.
B: He can stay. He stays focused. Very good friendships here. He's learnt to have more confidence in himself in what he can do.
A: Would you recommend Taekwondo to others?
B: Oh yes. We do all the time.
A: Do you know anything about Korea at all?
B: Very little. That's why we were very intrigued with the presentation. Three years ago, five or six years ago, we hosted a foreign exchange student from the Netherlands in our house and it was a program called Wide View for Understanding and I was talking to Kim and he was telling me that, I was asking him if there was any Korean students part of Wide View for foreign exchange students.
They come here and go through our school system for a year. Just so we can learn the culture, we are very impressed with the Korean culture and we have a nephew who is actually stationed in South Korea.
A: Is Taekwondo well known in your community?
B I don't think so. Maybe with the after school program he had at the church but other than that, first time we heard about it is when they put on an exhibition at his school. That was the first time I heard about it.
A: Do you think Taekwondo is appealing to Americans in general?
B: I think so.
A: Do you think it is well known enough?
B: No because we didn't know about it before then. Until they came to do a presentation at his school. That was the only way we heard about it.

A: 태권도에 대해 구체적으로, 혹은 다른 어떤 것이든 흥미로운 것에 대해서 말씀해 주시겠습니까?
B: 태권도에는 저희가 찾고 있던 정신적 수련과 육체적 단련이 있습니다. 제 아들이 무술을 배우고 싶어해서 여러 종류의 무술들에 대해 알아보았습니다. 태권도가 그 중 가장 조직적이고 규율적이었습니다.
A: 태권도에 대한 이야기를 어디서 들으셨습니까? 친구들에게서 들으셨습니까?
C: 학교에서 태권도에 대한 전단을 받아보았습니다. 전단에 소개된 태권도장에 가보지 못 했지만 여름캠프에서 그 태권도장에 대해 다시 듣게 되었습니다. 그렇게 해서 태권도 도장을 처음 가보게 되었습니다. 그 후 그 도장이 별로여서 지금 다니고 있는 도장으로 옮겼습니다.
A: 부모님께 질문 드리겠습니다. 왜 자녀에게 태권도를 가르치십니까?
B: 첫째 아이가 배우고 싶어했고, 태권도에 대해 알아본 후, 아까 얘기했듯이 태권도에는 강한 규율구조와 육체적 단련이 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 굉장히 조직적인 프로그램입니다. 그것이 태권도를 선택한 이유입니다.
A: 이미 대답하신 것 같은데요, 다른 무술에 대해 아는 것이 있습니까? (다른 무술에 비해)특별히 태권도가 매력적인 것이 있습니까?
B: 저는 군대에서 무술을 조금 배웠고, 또한 무술을 하는 사람들을 통해 배우기도 했습니다.
저희가 알고 있는 다른 무술들에 비해 태권도야 말로 우리가 배워야 할 무술이라고 생각했습니다. 태권도가 가장 인상 깊었습니다.
A: 태권도가 당신의 자녀에게 어떤 영향을 미치는 것 같습니까?
B: 네가 대답해 보겠니? 아빠가 대답할까?
D: 그 질문에 제가 대답할 수 있습니다. 아이의 집중력입니다. 집중력이 굉장히 좋아졌습니다.

B: 이제 이 아이는 가만히 있을 수 있습니다. 집중할 수 있습니다. 도장에서 친구들과의 우애도 좋고요. 아이가 자신이 하는 일들에 대해 자신감이 생겼습니다.
A: 태권도를 다른 사람들에게 추천하겠습니까?
B: 물론입니다. 사람들에게 항상 (태권도를)추천합니다.
A: 한국에 대해 아는 것이 있습니까?
B: 조금 알고 습니다. 그렇기 저희는 (태권도)발표회에 관심이 있었습니다. 3년, 5~6년 전 Wide View for Understanding이라는 프로그램을 통해 네덜란드 교환학생을 호스트한적이 있습니다. 프로그램의 킴이라는 사람에게 혹시 한국교환학생이 있는지 물어본 적이 있습니다.
교환학생들은 일년 동안 미국에 살면서 학교를 다닙니다. 문화를 배우기 위해서입니다. 저희는 한국 문화에 깊은 인상을 받았습니다. 조카가 한국에 미군으로 주둔하고 있는 조카도 있습니다.
A: 당신의 동네에 태권도가 많이 알려져 있습니까?
B: 그렇지 않은 것 같습니다. 교회에서 방과후 태권도 프로그램이 있다는 것 외에는 잘 몰랐습니다. 제 아들 학교에서 있었던 박람회를 통해 태권도에 대해 처음 알게 되었습니다. 그렇게 태권도에 대해 처음 들어보게 되었습니다.
A: 일반적으로 태권도가 미국인들에게 매력적이라고 생각하십니까?
B: 그런 것 같습니다.
A: 태권도가 미국에 충분히 잘 알려져 있다고 생각하십니까?
B: 아니요, 왜냐하면 저희도 전에는 몰랐으니까요. 학교에서 (태권도)시범이 있기 전까지는 몰랐습니다. 태권도시범이 저희가 알 수 있는 유일한 방법이었습니다.
